Trump administration steps up scrutiny of corporate diversity policies. Global IT consulting firm Accenture has agreed to pay $25 million to settle allegations by the United States government over its diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) practices, in the latest action by President Donald Trump’s administration against organisations accused of maintaining policies that take race and sex into account. The settlement, made public on Monday, was reached between Accenture and the U.S. Department of Justice and covers civil penalties and interest. Under the agreement, the company will pay the United States $25 million, with interest calculated at an annual rate of four per cent from September 9, 2026. “Accenture shall pay to the United States $25,000,000, inclusive of civil penalties and interest on the Settlement Amount at a rate of 4% per annum from September 9, 2026,” the settlement agreement stated. The agreement represents the latest in a series of actions by the Trump administration targeting diversity programmes across both the public and private sectors as the president intensifies his second-term campaign against what his administration describes as discriminatory DEI policies. The Justice Department had alleged that Accenture considered race and sex in certain hiring and promotion decisions as part of efforts to achieve demographic targets. Accenture, however, denied engaging in discrimination and said it had complied with applicable laws. The company stressed that the settlement did not amount to an admission of liability. “We have cooperated with the government's review, and we are pleased to put this matter behind us to avoid the costs and resource demands of prolonged litigation,” an Accenture spokesperson said. The settlement comes amid a broader shift in corporate America following a series of executive orders issued by Trump directing federal contractors and subcontractors to eliminate DEI-related programmes and practices. The administration has argued that DEI initiatives undermine merit-based decision-making and can amount to discrimination against white people and men. Civil rights advocates, however, have strongly opposed the administration’s approach, arguing that diversity initiatives are designed to address longstanding inequalities and barriers faced by women, ethnic minorities, LGBT people and other historically marginalised groups. Trump’s campaign against DEI has extended beyond corporations to universities and government agencies, with organisations facing increased scrutiny over diversity programmes, hiring practices and other initiatives. The pressure has also prompted a number of major U.S. companies to review, scale back or modify their diversity policies in response to the administration’s actions and the changing regulatory environment. Accenture is not the first major technology or professional services company to reach a settlement with the federal government over alleged DEI violations. Deloitte agreed in August to pay $21.5 million to resolve a Justice Department investigation concerning its diversity practices, according to a settlement agreement made public at the time. IBM also agreed to pay $17 million to settle a similar U.S. government investigation, with the agreement disclosed in April. The growing number of settlements highlights the increasing legal and regulatory pressure facing companies that operate diversity programmes, particularly those involving hiring, promotion and demographic targets. For companies with large workforces and extensive government contracts, the shift in federal policy has created a new compliance challenge as they seek to balance existing corporate diversity commitments with changing legal requirements under the Trump administration. While Accenture has agreed to the financial settlement, the company’s position remains that it complied with the law and did not discriminate. The agreement allows the company to resolve the government’s allegations without a formal admission of wrongdoing. The settlement is likely to reinforce the broader debate in the United States over the future of corporate DEI programmes, with the Trump administration continuing to push for their elimination while civil rights groups and other advocates defend them as important tools for promoting equal opportunity and addressing historical discrimination.
