China is building the world’s largest hydropower project on the Yarlung Tsangpo—the river that enters India as the Siang and becomes the Brahmaputra. The estimated $167 billion project will comprise five cascade stations, with about 60 GW of capacity and annual generation approaching 300 billion kWh. But can China actually stop India’s water? Not entirely. Hydrological research shows the Brahmaputra becomes dramatically larger inside India as monsoon-fed tributaries such as the Dibang, Lohit and Subansiri join it.
