WASU finds teacher shortage, poor infrastructure in schools

India • 13h ago • Source: publicofindia

Kohima, October 28 (MExN): The Western Angami Students Union (WASU) has flagged severe shortages of subject teachers and inadequate infrastructure in schools across its region, urging the concerned department to address the issues with “utmost urgency.”WASU President Ketouneikho Yavio and General Secretary Kelhusilie Nagi in a press release said that the union conducted an educational drive on October 26 and 27, visiting 20 schools, including government primary, middle, high and higher secondary schools, to inspect institutional conditions and interact with students and teachers. The union found that many schools were functioning without subject teachers for Tenyidie, Hindi and other subjects. Almost all primary schools were understaffed, with five teachers managing six classrooms, forcing them to engage community-provided assistant teachers whose expenses are borne by the teachers themselves. Some institutions lack adequate infrastructure requiring immediate repair, while others have no proper bathroom facilities. The WASU requested the department to look into the matter urgently for the welfare and upliftment of students. Appealing to the public to renew faith in government schools, the union called for systemic changes through shared contribution, the department providing required staff and infrastructure, the community coming together to increase enrollment, and teachers working diligently with motivated and disciplined students. The WASU also expressed appreciation to the Deputy Commissioner of Kohima for supporting the union during the drive.
