Department of Posts Initiates Preparatory Work for Rationalisation of Administrative Units The Department of Posts has initiated preparatory steps for the proposed creation, merger and rationalisation of Regions, Divisions and Sub-Divisions across Postal Circles, with a focus on enhancing administrative efficiency, business development and revenue generation. Prakash, Member (Personnel), Postal Services Board, has requested all Chief Postmasters General to undertake preparatory exercises in advance, pending formal orders. Proposals under consideration The proposals relating to the creation/merger of Regions, Divisions and Sub-Divisions received from Postal Circles are presently under consideration at the Directorate. The proposals were discussed during meetings held with Heads of Circles between 4 August and 7 August 2026 . Preparatory activities to be undertaken To ensure smooth and time-bound implementation once the proposals are approved, Circles have been requested to initiate the following activities without waiting for formal orders: Assessment and preparatory work for accommodation, logistics and manpower placement required for new or merged units. Assessment of infrastructure and computer requirements . Preparation of a manpower redeployment plan . The Directorate has emphasised that these activities should be completed at the earliest so that implementation can commence immediately after issuance of the formal orders without further delay. Existing manpower details sought The letter further requests Circles to submit details of the existing staff strength in the attached template to facilitate assessment of the present manpower deployment in the Circle for STS/JTS/Gr.B/ASP/IP categories. Importantly, the Directorate has asked for details relating to the existing administrative units and not the proposed units . The information is to be submitted by 21 September 2026 . Focus on timely implementation The communication indicates that the proposed administrative restructuring is being treated as a dashboard item , with emphasis on completing preparatory activities in advance. The objective is to ensure that necessary accommodation, infrastructure, computer facilities and manpower arrangements are ready for implementation once the proposals receive approval.
