Akhil Gogoi Meets Assam CM, Raises Flood Relief, Road Repairs and CBI Probe

Guwahati: Sivasagar MLA and Raijor Dal chief Akhil Gogoi on Monday met Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma at Janata Bhawan in Guwahati and raised a series of issues concerning flood relief, damaged roads, healthcare infrastructure, financial assistance and the alleged causes behind the recent floods in Upper Assam. Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Gogoi said the government had agreed to provide another Rs 10,000 to members of self-help groups who had earlier received the same amount. He also said one-time financial assistance would be provided to 16,000 people in Sivasagar by Tuesday. Gogoi said a combined budget of around Rs 1,500 crore had been proposed for Sivasagar and Charaideo districts. He added that he had urged the Chief Minister to repair around 160 km of damaged roads and address the condition of the civil hospital. He also raised the issue of compensation for businesses affected by the floods, particularly those without insurance. According to Gogoi, the government assured him that drainage problems across Sivasagar town would be addressed and steps would be taken to resolve the recurring flood situation along the Dorika River. He said projects worth around Rs 34 crore would also be launched. On bank loans, Gogoi said the Chief Minister had indicated that the affected borrowers would be provided relief through a “simple interest” mechanism. The Sivasagar MLA also sought a CBI investigation into the recent floods and the alleged large-scale excavation that he claimed contributed to the situation. “I have demanded a CBI investigation into the recent floods,” Gogoi said, adding that while the Chief Minister assured that an investigation would be conducted, he did not agree to a CBI probe. Gogoi further sought compensation for colleges affected by the floods, specifically mentioning Sivasagar and Nazira colleges, and said he had also raised the issue of an investigation into Bir Lachit Sena leader Manasjyoti Chetia’s death. Gogoi Targets Three Upper Assam MLAs Gogoi also launched a sharp attack on the government over claims regarding the presence of suspected Bangladeshi nationals in the region. He questioned why such allegations were being made particularly in Nazira constituency and asked who should be held responsible for the situation. “Where they are claiming these people are present is again Nazira constituency. Who is the MLA from Nazira? Whose government is it?” Gogoi said, referring to local MLA Mayur Borgohain. He alleged that the three MLAs—Dharmeswar Konwar, Mayur Borgohain and Sushanta Borgohain—were responsible for the worsening flood situation in Upper Assam and accused them of being “masterminds of the syndicate”. “These three are the masterminds of the syndicate. They should be arrested, and there should be a CBI investigation,” Gogoi said. He also said activists such as Shrinkhal Chaliha and Chitu Baruah should stage protests outside Mayur Borgohain’s residence over the issue.
