Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Breaks 57-Year-Old Duleep Trophy Record

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi scripted history in the Duleep Trophy on Monday, becoming the youngest player to score a half-century in the tournament at the age of 15 years and 157 days. Representing East Zone in their semifinal against Central Zone at the BCCI Centre of Excellence Ground 1 in Bengaluru, Sooryavanshi reached the milestone in just 42 deliveries. He brought up his fifty in attacking fashion, hitting off-spinner Saransh Jain for a six. Sooryavanshi broke a record that had stood for 57 years. The previous mark belonged to Laxman Singh, who scored a Duleep Trophy fifty at the age of 16 years and 23 days in 1969. Piyush Chawla had later registered a half-century at 16 years and 307 days in the 2005 edition. The Bihar youngster came close to creating another major record but fell short of a century. Sooryavanshi was dismissed for 92 from 81 balls, leaving him just eight runs away from becoming the youngest Duleep Trophy centurion. That record continues to belong to batting great Sachin Tendulkar, who scored a century in the 1990-91 season at the age of 17 years and 262 days. A century would also have placed Sooryavanshi second on the list of the youngest Indians to score a First-Class hundred. The record is held by Punjab's Dhruv Pandove, who reached three figures at 14 years and 293 days against Jammu and Kashmir during the 1988-89 Ranji Trophy season. The innings marked only SSuryavanshi'ssecond fifty in First-Class cricket. Despite his growing reputation in white-ball cricket, the youngster had struggled to make a similar impact in the longer format. Before this innings, he had scored 215 runs in 13 First-Class innings at an average of 16.53. Sooryavanshi has already attracted considerable attention after becoming the youngest Indian to make his international debut. His latest Duleep Trophy performance could now add another significant chapter to his rapidly developing cricket career. The teenager is also serving as vice-captain of the East Zone team. On Sunday, he briefly took charge after Ishan Kishan left the field following a blow to his wrist while keeping. Sooryavanshi also successfully used a DRS review during Kishan's absence. East Zone had earlier dismissed defending champions Central Zone for 266 after opting to bowl first. At the time of reporting, East Zone were 199/2 after 37 overs, with Sooryavanshi's 92 proving to be a major contribution to their strong start.
