Bengaluru plans GPS tracking for debris vehicles to stop illegal dumping and bring more accountability to waste transport In a fresh step to tackle the growing problem of illegal dumping of construction and demolition waste, the Greater Bengaluru Authority is planning to make GPS devices mandatory for vehicles used to transport debris across the city. The proposal is expected to help civic officials track where such vehicles are headed and prevent waste from being dumped in vacant plots, roadsides and other unauthorised locations. The move comes amid rising concern over the large volume of debris generated in Bengaluru as the city continues to expand and rebuild. Civic authorities have increasingly found that debris from construction sites is being dumped illegally instead of being taken to designated processing or disposal sites. This has led to civic clutter, blocked drains and environmental nuisance in several localities. Under the proposed system, vehicles carrying construction waste will need to be fitted with GPS units and registered with the GBA so that their movement can be monitored more closely. Officials believe this will create a digital trail for each vehicle and make it easier to identify violations if debris disappears along the route.
